The Inquest Into The Death Of Samuel Brown

A four-year campaign for a family’s right to answers.

Saron Gebresellassi represented the family of Samuel Brown, a deaf-blind student who died on campus.

The province initially refused to call an inquest. Over four years, she convened 124 stakeholders across six sectors in support of the family. The refusal was reversed, and a ten-day coroner’s inquest was secured.

An inquest does not assign blame. It examines the circumstances of a death in public and allows a jury to recommend measures that may prevent similar deaths. For the family, it meant an independent, public examination of what happened to Samuel.

This matter is described as it appears in the public record. The mandates of the Private Office are not disclosed.
