Age, Dignity And The Right To Drive

An application for leave to appeal on age-based discrimination.

Saron Gebresellassi led an application to the Supreme Court of Canada for leave to appeal from a decision of the British Columbia Court of Appeal.

The applicant, a 90-year-old retired professor of engineering, had his driver’s licence revoked. He alleged that the decision discriminated against him on the basis of age.

For many older Canadians, a driver’s licence is the line between independence and isolation. The application asked the country’s highest court to consider how age is weighed when the state withdraws it.

This matter is described as it appears in the public record. The mandates of the Private Office are not disclosed.
